What would you like from a Twitter competition?

Published 27/08/2010

So, we've finished our very first Twitter competition, which ran over three months. People were asked to tweet a given #tag each week and add a comment of their own. Entrants were allowed to tweet up to 10 times per day, and winners were drawn at random by an independent third party.

We had lots of fun reading your tweets, and we were delighted to brighten the days of the winners at the end of each month when the winners were announced. However, we also had a couple of people tweet us feedback that they were unhappy that people who only ever tweeted competition entries were allowed to enter, and that they had thought that the content of their tweets was being judged. As the whole idea of it was to make you smile… we thought we'd get some of your ideas for next time.

What makes a Twitter competition fun for you?

Before we embark on more Twitter competitions, we thought we'd ask for your ideas for what makes them both fun and fair for all. Please use the comment feature below to share your ideas for a really fun and fair competition that we can run on Twitter in the future.

It would be so much nicer if like the other 2 posters said you judged our tweets on a merit basis and if they are run over a whole month again, maybe limit to one entry per day/week/person so you dont have hundreds/thousands to read through and decide your favourites from? Please dont go down the route most companies have on FB and make them voting cometitions, they only ever tend to be won anymore by people in competition groups who trade voting for each other off over each competition!

I love all the competitions trollbeads offer, it makes collecting that much more special! As for me, prior to the competition I wasn't a twitter user, so thanks trollbeads for introducing me to a new hobby! Like Lisa, I wasn't sure whether or not content was being judged as sometimes it seemed it was and other times it seemed it wasn't. I'd agree that perhaps next time it should be judged on content, it would make the whole thing more thoughtful. Other than that I loved the idea :) and can't wait for the next one! thanks trollbeads for making me smile!

I agree it should be content based, and to begin with I thought it was, and took ages thinking of things to tweet, as did my sister in law. We had a sort of private competition this last month to see who could tweet the most.(sad I know!) I won, she didn`t, so we are sharing my prize, as I actually think she entered more than anyone else! I do agree though one prize per competitor. I just wish she had won instead me. Thank you though, it`s been fun!!

I feel that it should be either one entry per person (a RT) or content based, which is how I thought the twitter competition was judged. I am new to Twitter (2/3 weeks) but have enjoyed the competition during this time. I do agree though that to win twice did feel unfair. But not sure if that is a slightly tainted idea, as I had previously believed that it was based on the content?? The reservation I have with the Twitter comp is the prize is bigger compared to FB - maybe it should be a more equal prize? Also make it more geared for the trollbead collector? Overall I really enjoy the competitions and would like them to continue. Thank you A x

Well I never win anyway and I will have to figure out how twitter works. There are things to be said for random, ie no bias, but then it does mean putting the time in effort into thinking up an answer is a little "wasted" maybe.

I loved the twitter comp but was never sure whether it was about content or not - I kidded myself that it was when I was lucky enough to win! The whole point of twitter is to compress ideas into a limited number of characters - so next time I think that the content should be explicitly judged for quality! Thanks for the opportunity to offer feedback: that sort of thing makes us feel valued :^))

Definitely should be content based tweets - thought that's how I had won, I've only just learnt it was at random! lol I spent ages thinking up reasons as to why Trollbeads are the best! Nobody should ever win twice on the same competition.
